aids, zambia / francesco zizola

"Lusaka’s main daily, the ‘Times of Zambia’ reports in bold characters that ‘masturbation is the only way to defeat AIDS’. The fight against the virus is being challenged by the fact those teachers and doctors have also been decimated by the disease making any effort to educate on the disease extremely difficult. A fairly accurate account on the number of infected people is hard to get, but other data has shown that life expectancy has decreased from 55 to 33 years, and it could decrease even further. Official figures report that one in five Zambians is HIV-positive, but the rate is almost double as much. Every year 32,000 children are born HIV-positive; orphaned and sick children crowd the city’s streets, while food production is decreasing in the country as farmers are also affected. The IMF, the World Bank and other institutions are also imposing strict financial checks on internal revenue and debt, as well as encouraging privatization of the copper mines in the northeast to raise money to implement prevention programs."
